PROFILE

J. D. Berkeley Architect is a firm guided by a design philosophy rooted in the classical canons of architecture: proportion and scale, the careful orchestration of shadow and light, and a deep respect for place and regional vernacular. We design spaces that invite a sense of history, where time-worn comfort and enduring beauty coexist with the ease of modern life, drawing meaning from the materials and traditions that define a region's character.

Whether undertaking new construction or the sensitive restoration of historic properties, we work in close collaboration with our clients from earliest concept through final material selection, ensuring the finished work is beautiful, enduring, and genuinely suited to the way people live today.

BIOGRAPHY

JD Berkeley RA.jpg

J. D. Berkeley, AIA is a Washington, DC architect whose work is rooted in the classical traditions of residential design and a deep belief that well-crafted spaces shape how people experience their daily lives. Originally from Oklahoma and a graduate of Virginia Tech's Master of Architecture program, he brings to every project a sensibility honed over years of bespoke residential practice, where proportion, material, and detail are never afterthoughts.

That foundation informs everything that followed: serving as Director of Architecture at the Folger Shakespeare Library on Capitol Hill, where he led a multimillion-dollar renovation of the landmark Paul Cret building, and his current role as Architect & Capital Project Manager for DC Public Schools. The through line is the same whether the project is a family home or a civic institution, architecture that is thoughtful, enduring, and genuinely responsive to the people who use it.
